The Oil of Love & Trust
I was familiar with Geranium from having grown up with a couple of varieties of them in the garden, but I thought they just flowered and looked pretty. I didn’t realise there was more to them than meets the eye.
Geranium is a member of the Pelargonium genus, and while there are over 200 different varieties of Pelargonium flowers, only a few are used as essential oils. The use of Geranium as an essential oil dates back to ancient Egypt when the Egyptians used it to beautify the appearance of the skin.
Geranium is used in skin and hair care products to promote the appearance of clear skin and healthy hair, and is a staple of the perfume industry. You can try this at home by adding a drop to your moisturiser to make your skin feel smoother, or adding a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner bottle to give your hair a vibrant, healthy looking glow.
The aroma of Geranium is distinct and unique, with floral being an accurate yet lacking descriptor. I find that this is either a smell you love or hate. If you love it, it is great to diffuse to promote a feeling of calm and balance. If you hate it, you will still be gifted with feelings of calm and balance, you just might not enjoy the experience.
Apart from creating an atmosphere of calm and balance, emotionally it packs a punch. As the Oil of Love & Trust, it fosters receptivity to human love and connection and facilitates trust, especially when individuals have lost trust in others due to difficult life circumstances. It can be used to aid the healing of a broken heart by facilitating grief, softening anger and reopening the heart. I used Geranium in a special blend that I wore over my heart after experiencing my own heartbreak. You might need some Geranium in your life if you need to heal the heart, instil unconditional love or foster trust.
